That’s the main obstacle organizations such as the Southwest Family Advocacy Center in Goodyear face while fighting child sexual abuse, Prevention Coordinator Chris Panneton said.For that reason, the center is continuing its efforts to fight child sexual abuse through education with a 2.5-hour program called Stewards of Children, which will focus on how to prevent, recognize and respond to abuse. West Valley community and resource centers will host informational workshops about online predators, child safety and child abuse on behalf of the Southwest Family Advocacy Center in Goodyear, in the hopes of reducing the number of child abuse cases in the area.

Despite efforts to raise awareness and prevent child abuse, the agency has seen a 58 percent increase of cases between 2008 and 2014. It has investigated 3,437 reported cases over the past seven years and has provided services to 4,319 victims.

“Nobody wants to think this really happens as much as it does or hear the awful details, but we have to be aware,” said Detective Sgt. John Little with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. “If you want to talk about something that’s got a global impact across our society, it’s this. If we don’t address this properly, it’s going to continue to destroy our community.”

Little works alongside a number of partnering agencies at the Southwest Family Advocacy Center in Goodyear to help victims of domestic violence and child abuse.
